Why Cultural Heritage Matters

Published · Malta Cultural Institute Foundation editorial

Heritage is less about the past than about how we choose to carry it.

Heritage is often imagined as something fixed: a monument, a museum object, a date in a history book. But heritage is also a relationship — between people today and the places, practices and memories they inherit.

In Malta, that relationship is visible everywhere. Limestone streets, village festas, a grandmother's recipe, a phrase in Maltese that has no neat translation: each is a thread linking present communities to earlier generations.

Caring for heritage means more than preservation. It means understanding context, telling stories accurately, and leaving room for new generations to interpret what they inherit in their own way.
