How Storytelling Connects Generations

Published · Malta Cultural Institute Foundation editorial

Stories are one of the oldest ways knowledge moves from one generation to the next.

Long before written records, communities relied on stories to pass on knowledge, values and identity. Proverbs, folk tales and songs carried practical wisdom alongside a sense of belonging.

Storytelling still does this work. When older people share memories and younger people listen — and respond with stories of their own — both gain a fuller picture of where they come from.

Recording and sharing such stories responsibly, with consent and care, is a simple but powerful way to keep cultural knowledge alive.
